Stones River Quarry-July 2013

During our travels to visit National Parks we always try to visit sites where we can collect fossils, minerals and rocks.  So our travels have a dual purpose, visit the nations National Parks, and rock hounding.  Each summer we return home with the back of our pickup loaded down with all our treasures.
This summers adventure took us to Stones River National Battlefield, a  Civil War site we have visited a couple times before, except this time we had learned about a quarry that is located across the street from the Union  Headquarters. We always enjoy visiting Murfreesboro, TN because there is a great Italian Steak Restaurant there, Demo's. After five visits to this restaurant we have never been disappointed at the price or the taste.
You can park in the Union Headquarters parking lot and turn around and look across the street and you will see a large tailing pile from the quarry. In this tailings pile you will find crinoids and brachiopods. While the specimens are not the best, we did manage to find a number of specimens to take home with us.  After a hour or so of looking around we decided we had enough, it was July after all and we were in TN and even though it was late in the day the heat was a bit more than we could take. So we packed up our finds and headed on over to Demo's for some good eats and ice cold tea.
